About Us

Frequently Asked Questions

When did The Sound Garden open?
The Baltimore location opened in 1993 in a small space across the street from our current location. We aggressively pursued and stocked the widest array of used and new music, so naturally our customer base expanded rapidly. In 1995, we leased our current Baltimore location and moved in on a September night. With free parking and ten times the space, our buyers contributed to our decision to expand our selection by adding vinyl, DVDs, Blu-Rays, video games and DJ equipment.

What the story with Syracuse and why open a store there?
We opened the Syracuse store in 1997. Both stores feature a large warehouse "Indie" vibe (we are too cheap to make them look nice) with free parking lots. Armory Square, Syracuse is very similar to Fells Point, Baltimore. With ownership hailing from upstate New York and Syracuse University lacking a record store, it seemed like a worthy idea. Ron and Eric have made the 'Cuse store their Media Playhouse...we think you're gonna love this store if you pay a visit!

How do I get to The Sound Garden?
Both of our locations are convenient and easy to find. They are accessible by car as well as public transportation, and offer free parking! Try out these simple directions for the Baltimore location...or these for our Syracuse location.

What are your store hours?
Both of our locations have extended hours for the convenience of our busy customers:

Is the new music and movies mixed in with used music and movies?
Nope! We keep the new music and movies separated for your convenience and easier shopping.

Do you carry rare, hard to find or out of print selections?
We get lots of requests for rare and obscure items...if we don't have it in stock, we will help you find and special order it.

Is your staff knowledgeable in all areas/genres?
We do our best to staff our stores with employees that have a vast knowledge of music and film, so our customers can feel confident that they are getting all the information they need to make a purchase decision. If for some reason we cannot provide information for you immediately, we will do our best to get an answer for you ASAP regarding any inquiry.

How can I get in contact with someone at the Baltimore and/or Syracuse locations?

Why don't you sell online? Why are your prices so cheap?
Our buyers are always searching for the lowest wholesale cost. These savings we pass directly to you. Most closeout deals involve limited quantities and supply rarely meets demand. Often we don't get enough to supply beyond our massive retail customer shop in the stores. Buy now - merchandise may be priced higher or out-of-print later.

What video games do you sell?
We buy and sell Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, Wii, and X-Box 360. We pay more for your games! Try us. Try them. We will be your game store.

How do I sell/trade my music, movies and games?
Bring them in between noon & 9:30 PM, 7 days a week. We pay the most for your music, movies and games.

  • We offer 20% more for store credit than cash.
  • We pay up to $4 - $5 per full length CD.
  • We pay up to $6 cash per full length DVD or Blu-Ray.
  • We may offer you $1 - $2 for scratched CDs/DVDs/ Blu-Rays that we deem resurfaceable. The machine costs us $3 per unit to remove the scratches so this is usually on a case-by-case basis.
  • Pricing on games varies greatly. We offer the maximum cash possible and 20% more for store credit.
  • We do not buy: CDs/DVDs/games without the case and artwork; parts of boxed sets.

Can I get a job?
We rarely are hiring but always accept applications. Just stop in and ask for one.

Do you take Special Orders?
We take them every day and fill most within 72 hours. Special orders are taken in the store. Some may require a deposit that acts as credit slip towards your purchase.

What is your return policy?

  • All new and used CDs & DVDs are guaranteed for 7 days from date of purchase
  • All returns are for store credit only
  • You must have your itemized receipt for returns
  • Any merchandise purchased with a return credit is non-returnable
  • The following items are non-returnable: new video games, vinyl, skull candy, magazines, posters, cigarettes and tobacco items, health/beauty items, food and drinks

Will you stock my CD? DVD? T-shirt?
Yes on your CD/DVD. We will consign (pay you when it sells) your piece. T-shirts are tough. We have very limited space so we prefer these be from local bands that play area shows. Call either store and ask for the Consignments Manager for more information regarding stocking your items.
